So, how frequently should you sharpen it? Let’s delve into the best practices to ensure your chainsaw is always ready to tackle the task!
When to sharpen your saw
When should I sharpen my saw? If you watch the sawdust come out of your saw, you will notice that when the chain is new, it comes out of the cut in nice, large shavings. The saw cuts effortlessly and is a pleasure to work with. As the chain gets dull, you will have to work harder to force the saw to cut, the shavings turn to dust, and the saw is working much harder. It is now time to sharpen your chain.
We will show you how to use your new Stihl 2-in-1 file guide, but first, there are a few things you need to know.
Protective attire
You will need Safety Glasses and Leather Gloves. You will be working with your chainsaw, which will have sharp cutters. It is easy to hurt yourself if you are not careful. Before you start, please use your protective gear.
Tools Needed
A Bar Wrench, Bench Vise/Pocket Stump Vice, and the proper Stihl 2-in-1 file guide are needed. Before starting, use the bar wrench to adjust the chain tension to a slight taunt. You should be able to move the chain with some effort. We suggest you use the bar wrench shank placed behind the cutter to move them.
Now, put your saw in the vice of your choosing. If in your workshop, use your bench vice. Clamp the saw by its chain bar in the middle, allowing you to move the chain around the guide bar freely. If sharpening in the woods, use a large stump as a work surface and pound the prongs of the vise into the stump. Clamp the saw into the vice by its guide bar so you can rotate the chain. Now select the proper Stihl 2-in-1 file guide, one that will correspond to the pitch of your bar and chain. It is marked on your Stihl bar.
Once you have your saw appropriately clamped, Unlock the saw chain brake and use your bar wrench shank to help move them forward into position. Then, relock the chain brake and then start sharpening.
The following video will instruct you on properly using your Stihl 2-in-1 file guide.
Remember to readjust the tension saw chain when you are done sharpening before using your saw.
